Flawless Bridal Make Up Tips

Every bride-to-be wants to be sure there make up stays in one place on her wedding day. Between heat, tears, rain, and lots of hugging, it’s easy for your make up to smear and smudge. As a bridal make up artist in Manchester I like to read top tips from other make up artists, Here are Alexa, of The Glam Fairy, top 10 tips for making sure your make up last and looks great in photographs through out your wedding day.

1. You want a great primer with a silicone base. Silicone fills in fine lines and blocks the sebaceous glands from producing oil so using that as an anchor underneath all the make up makes sure it stays put all day.

2. Foundation: The biggest mistake that brides make on their special day is using a foundation that is not light responsive, meaning it is not absorbing and deflecting light in a way that makes you look great for photos.  You need a foundation that mimics the way light bounces on your regular skin so you always want to make sure your make up artist or you do a trial to make sure your foundation doesn’t drop any lighter than your normal skin shade.

3. Neutral shades of eye shadow, no bright colours because you want your look to be elegant

4. Use water resistant mascara

5. Add a little bit more bronzer and blush than you would normally think, because it wears off throughout the day

6. Make sure your eye liner is waterproof. I like M·A·C’s Powerpoint Pencil, it’s amazing!  You have about 60 seconds of playtime until it sets and then it won’t smudge

7. A brides skin should always have a nice fresh glow.  Products like M·A·C Strobe Fluid and M·A·C Mineralize Skin Finish, placed directly on the cheekbone give off a great cheek highlight

8. Prep the skin with a great moisturizer and face mask, keeping the skin in tip top condition is key

9. De-puff and cover dark circles use a concealor that reflects and hydrates your eye area

10. Seal it. Get a sealing spray to set everything and make it stay all day long.  I love Motives 10 Years Younger Spray, Model in a Bottle, Makeup Forever Mist and Fix, and M·A·C Fix Plus spray.  It basically sets all your work and keeps everything from moving.

Autumn/Winter Makeup Trends 2014

The summer is nearly over and it’s time to discover hot makeup looks for Autumn/Winter 2014. As a makeup artist in Manchester I’ve been busy advising clients on how to make subtle changes to their make up looks to be bang on trend for this A/W 2014. Here’s my top three make up trends…

1: Focus On Bold Eye-makeup

This season is all about having fun with colour, shimmering blue and green eye shadow featured on the Dior cat walk. The eye shadow has been winged out and blended away up to the corner of the eye brow. You can fade it easily using a cotton bud. The upper lid was the main focus with no eye shadow underneath the eye. Silver and pink shades of eye shadow are also popular this season, I particularly like the makeup created for the Donna Karen cat walk by Charlotte Tilbury. The number 1 must have product is black eye liner, draw a line inside your waterline using a kohl pencil to define your eyes. I’ve been experimenting with different variations of liquid liner shapes on my upper lid.

2: Super Lashes

Volumised jet black eye lashes are key this season, apply lashings of mascara to your top and bottom lashes, false eye lashes are also back. This look was created for the Prada cat walk, they have clumped the lashes together to create a doll eye effect, I think it looks fab!

3: Stained Berry Lips

Place a small amount of foundation onto your lips to tone down your natural lip colour. This look isn’t about creating a perfect pout, instead apply a deep berry lip colour to the centre of your lips use your fingers to blend it out to the corner of your lips and into your cupid bow. Dot a small amount of Vasaline in the centre of your lips to keep them hydrated. The below look was created for the Johnathan Sauders catwalk, by  makeup artist Lucia Pieroni. If your not keen on berry shades of lipstick as an alternative go for red!

Make Up Artist Tester Warnings & Advise When Shopping For Make Up!

I read a story this week about a waitress who has claimed that she contracted herpes from a MAC lipstick endorsed by Rihanna at one of the singer’s concerts. Starkeema Greenidge, 28, developed mouth sores after a MAC Cosmetics representative applied the ‘RiRi Woo’ lipstick on her at a pop-up counter as she attended a show in Brooklyn, New York.According to Greenidge, when she asked if the lipstick tester was clean, the woman replied, “Yeah, yeah, yeah.” Two days later, Greenidge developed a cold sore on her lip and her doctor diagnosed it as herpes. She is now suing MAC, which launched Rihanna’s lipstick in May, after she suffered emotional distress and a loss of earnings.

Make Up Tester Warnings

There are potential dangers of trying make up testers because they can become contaminated with bacteria and viruses which can cause you to potentially contract infections, break outs or herpes. As a Make Up Artist in Manchester I know how important hygeine is, I always use antibacterial wash and brush cleaner in front of a client to reassure them that my brushes are clean. I wouldn’t use a lipstick from the bullet and I always use two disposible mascara wands to avoid dippling and lipgloss applicators at all times. I shop in department stores and always want to try a product before I apply it to check the pigment quality and the shade. However I wouldn’t apply a lipstick or eyeliner without seeing it sanatised first and the eyeliner sharpened. I would also advise that you never test a product if the counter looks dirty or if you had just seen a customer apply it.

never test a lipstick straight from the bullet

5 Tips On How To Play It Safe Before Trying A Make Up Tester

  1. When I worked a make up counter we used to scrape the top of the lipstick off every night, check for signs of this
  2. Powders and eye shadows are least likely to become contaminated because there not moist, you can still brush the top layer off lightly with a tissue for peace of mind.
  3. Shop in the morning as the counter and products will have been cleaned the night before and there won’t have been lots of people touching it,
  4. Unless you’re getting a shade match for foundation/concealor I recommend that you test the product on the back of your hand
  5. Ensure the make up artist uses a hand sanitiser before applying any products with their fingers,
  6. Avoid testing skincare products if they don’t have a lid and ask for a sample so you can try it at home.

Alice In Wonderland Make Up

I’m really looking forward to the film release of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ directed by Tim Burton, on the 5th March.

Many great stars have been cast including Stephen Fry as the Cheshire Cat.

‘Walt Disney’ relased photos to the press this weekend and the make up effects look incredible!

Check out Helena Bonham Carter with her heart shaped lips, blue eyelids and drawn on eyebrows, she looks fantastic as the ‘Red Queen’

And hows about Anne Hathaway with her flawless white make up base and bold red lips, she looks amazing as the ‘White Queen’.

But the most fabulous look has to be Johnny Depp with perfectly defined purple lips and contoured cheek bones transforming him into ‘The Mad Hatter’.

The Top Make Up Brushes Used By The Experts

The secret to applying fantastic make up is to invest in some fantastic make up brushes that you feel comfortable using. You don’t have to spend a fortune on tons of brushes and can start by picking up a few basics such as one for eye shadow, eyebrow, concealor and blusher.

So many make up brushes to choose from!

So many make up brushes to choose from!

Every Make up Artist has their favourite brushes, I like to use brushes from Ruby and Millie and Lisa Eldridge’s range created for No7, however every brand has different shapes, sizes and qualities so test some to find the right ones for you. I usually pop into my high street make up retailer to see how they feel on my skin and whether any of the bristles fall out.

During my makeovers the most frequent question I get asked is:
“Why do I need to use a foundation brush? I have always used a sponge.“

Foundation make up brushes are fantastic because you can place a small amount of your liquid foundation onto the back of your hand and dip the brush it and start applying it onto your nose and cheeks, just where you need it.  Your foundation lasts longer because you are not using so much and the result is much better.

A sponge is wasteful because it soaks up your foundation, and can often leave steaks. Fingers are still best for blending the foundation into the jaw line and around the forehead.

If you want some more tips on the best brushes out there; check out this article in the Daily Mail by Celebrity Make up Artist Jemma Kidd. She goes through an assortment of make up brushes and reveals her personal favourites.

Hope you find it useful. x
