Spring 2016 Make up Trends

As a make up artist in Manchester it’s important that I’m always aware of up-coming make up trends, and with Spring just around the corner it’s great to see there are already some fantastic products available to help you achieve that post-winter glam.

I just love telling anyone that’ll listen what’s hot when it comes to cosmetics, so I’ve put together a few key Spring 2016 make up looks that I’ve seen on the cat walk and been using on my clients. I’ve also included a few product recommendations to suit every budget.

You don't need a make up bag bursting with products in spring.

You don’t need a makeup bag bursting with products in spring.

This time two years ago, it was all about pastel shades, but this Spring the most important thing is creating a dewy flawless base. Less make up products are needed because you want your make up to look fresh and youthful, you can use less layers and thinner textures. Must haves are luminous foundations, layered lip textures and . Here’s my top 3 looks that all have different focuses and that are easy to recreate.

Spring make up look #1 – Layered Textured Lips

It’s time to get artistic using various lip products, matt lipstick are out and lip oils are in, many brands have bought out there own version however my favourite is YSL ‘Volupte Tint-In-Oil (£23.50) because it contains argan oil making them extremely hydrating, also the packaging is very girlie and eye catching. First dot a small amount of lipstick onto your lips and smudge it in with your finger, creating a long lasting stain. Place a dot of the lip oil in the centre of your mouth, this will make your lips look fuller and youthful.

There’s a shade for everyone, I always have 1 & 4 to hand.

Spring make up look #2 – Bronzed Skin

060415bcbg-2016-ss15-pw

You can create the illusion that you have been on a two week holiday using the power of make up.

Chanel cat walk models make up emphasis was on perfectly bronzed skin, you can apply Daniel Sandler Water colour ‘Rivieria’ (£15.00) to contour your cheeks and apply across your forehead and nose for a naturally sun kissed glow. The creamy formula makes it easier to correct mistakes and its perfect if your skin has become drier in the winter months. The model’s skin was dewy and appeared flawless, to achieve this you could try Giorgio Armani ‘Luminous silk’ (£35.50) it’s oil free so won’t clog your pores and is a medium coverage foundation, to achieve a full coverage buff with a foundation brush.

Spring make up look #3 – Metallic Blue and Green Eyes

Blue eye shadow complements brown and hazel eyes beautifully.

Blue eye shadow complements brown and hazel eyes beautifully.

Eyes were full impact on the Spring 2016 catwalks with metallic green and blue tones coming through to create a unique smoky eyes. You can create an amazing result using a cream eye shadow such as YSL ‘Full Metal’ eye shadow in ‘9 or 10’ (£21). The synthetic eye shadow brush is easy to use to apply it to your eye lids and along your lower lash line, add a lighter shade in the corner of your eye to brighten your eye.  If you like a matt make up base, a popular one is ‘Dior skin Forever fusion fluid (£32). As this make up look focuses on the eyes, I’d recommend a nude lip gloss, which won’t distract from them.

Spring is a fantastic time to throw away any products that you haven’t used for years or that are past there sell by date, as a general rule you should change your mascara every 6 months, foundations after one year and eye shadows can be kept for up to two years. There are many more makeup trends and tips available online at Vogue Beauty.

Top 5 Bridal Makeup Tips For Oily Skin

The wedding season is fast approaching, I’ve been a busy bee this month with bridal makeup trial bookings. Alot of clients book me because they want there makeup base to be completely flawless on there wedding day. Some of my clients have an oily skin type, which is a particular concern because often shine can appear or pores can be enlarged. As a bridal make up in Manchester
I believe it’s really important to absorb shine without taking out the light and radiance from the skin.

Top 5 tips to create make up longevity for a bride with oily skin

1. Apply oil free skin care and make up products, its important to not add extra oil to your skin

Laura Mecier is one brand of oil free primer

4. Prep with a primer to absorb excess oil and ensure your foundation won’t slide off

3. Avoid cream blushers as they may not show up or sit on your skin as well as powder blushers

If you have oily skin avoid blishers with shimmer

Avoid blushers with which shimmer

4. Don’t apply a highlighter to your nose, chin or upper lip, instead focus on your cheek bones and temple

5. Remember to finish with a pressed matt powder and keep it to hand, pay extra attention to your t-zone

Finally the only other thing I’d recommend is that you book a makeup trial in the morning so you can see if the makeup lasts through out the day. Whether your a bride this year or next year I hope you have a very happy wedding day!

Top 3 Makeup Gift Ideas This Christmas

Like lots of other bargain hunters I braved the shops on Black Friday to buy my Christmas presents, as a makeup artist in Manchester my friends and family love receiving makeup from me that I recommend and know they wouldn’t choose for themselves. Here are a few of the products I bought which might help you if your stuck for what to buy your loved ones.

Top 3 Makeup Christmas Gift Ideas

1: YSL Limited Edition Wild Collection Touche Eclat # 1

Every girl needs a bit of help this party season and this product does the business, it’s brilliant at hiding dark shadows and you can use it to add light to your face on your chin, cheek bones and cupid bow. The packaging is beautiful, the Touche Eclat shade 1 (£25) I bought is the lightest universal shade however others are available if you have an olive skin tone.

2: Creme De La Mer Limited Edition Illuminating Powder

I had to buy this Illuminating Powder (£70) it’s infused with illuminating gemstones, shimmering pearls and pigments that provides all complexions with a healthy luminous glow. I love how it’s pressed instead of loose so great for anyone on the go, my friend has dry skin so this will suit her skin type, however someone with an oily complexion would prefer a matte powder to hide unwanted shine.

3: Nars Limited Edition Holiday Lipstick

My little sister is a lipstick fiend, she has got hundreds of shades but I couldn’t disappoint her and not add to her collection this Christmas. Nars have 3 limited edition lipsticks available I went for ‘Deadly Catch’ (£19.50) it’s a deep red and I know she will love it as she always focuses her makeup on her lips instead of her eyes.

Morticia Addams Halloween Makeup

Halloween is my favourite time of year, I’ve got a halloween wedding booking this year and I’m ready to transform the bridal party into zombies, witches and corpse brides. As a makeup artist in Manchester I thought I’d go for a different look for myself this year without prosthetics to cut costs. As I’ve got fair skin and long dark hair it made sense to be Morticia Addams.

What You’ll Need To Become Morticia Addams

  1. Eye shadow and face primer to mattify your skin
  2. White watercolour or ultra light Foundation
  3. Black liquid liner and black brow pencil
  4. False eye lashes or lashings of mascara
  5. White, grey and black eye shadow
  6. Red lipliner and plum lipstick
  7. Highlighter and powder
  8. Tools, foundation brush, two eye shadow brushes and a lip brush

10 Steps To Create The Morticia Addams Look

  1. Apply eye primer and face primer to ensure the make up sticks and lasts all night
  2. I’m going to use a foundation two shades lighter than my skin tone I’ll buff it in with a foundation for full coverage
  3. Use a silver grey eye shadow to create a smokey look and blend it just past your eye socket
  4. Apply black eyeliner to both of your eyes on your lid and below your eye. To add depth use black eye shadow in the outer corner of your eye and blend it out with a clean eye shadow brush
  5. Highlight your cheek bones with a highlighter, such as Benefit ‘High Beam’ and dust grey eye shadow under your cheek bones and down the side of your nose to make it more pointed and defined
  6. Apply black mascara and kohl black liner to your inner and upper water line to finish the dramatic eye
  7. Then go for it with a red lip liner to enhance your cupid bow, apply all over and mix it with a matt plum lipstick on top
  8. Fill in your eyebrows with a brow pencil to create a rounded shape, follow your brow bone and elongate the length
  9. Set with a translucent powder or fixing spray

If you’re not inspired by this, you could go as Wednesday Addams or Frankenstein’s Bride, Happy Halloween!

Autumn/Winter Makeup Trends 2014

The summer is nearly over and it’s time to discover hot makeup looks for Autumn/Winter 2014. As a makeup artist in Manchester I’ve been busy advising clients on how to make subtle changes to their make up looks to be bang on trend for this A/W 2014. Here’s my top three make up trends…

1: Focus On Bold Eye-makeup

This season is all about having fun with colour, shimmering blue and green eye shadow featured on the Dior cat walk. The eye shadow has been winged out and blended away up to the corner of the eye brow. You can fade it easily using a cotton bud. The upper lid was the main focus with no eye shadow underneath the eye. Silver and pink shades of eye shadow are also popular this season, I particularly like the makeup created for the Donna Karen cat walk by Charlotte Tilbury. The number 1 must have product is black eye liner, draw a line inside your waterline using a kohl pencil to define your eyes. I’ve been experimenting with different variations of liquid liner shapes on my upper lid.

2: Super Lashes

Volumised jet black eye lashes are key this season, apply lashings of mascara to your top and bottom lashes, false eye lashes are also back. This look was created for the Prada cat walk, they have clumped the lashes together to create a doll eye effect, I think it looks fab!

3: Stained Berry Lips

Place a small amount of foundation onto your lips to tone down your natural lip colour. This look isn’t about creating a perfect pout, instead apply a deep berry lip colour to the centre of your lips use your fingers to blend it out to the corner of your lips and into your cupid bow. Dot a small amount of Vasaline in the centre of your lips to keep them hydrated. The below look was created for the Johnathan Sauders catwalk, by  makeup artist Lucia Pieroni. If your not keen on berry shades of lipstick as an alternative go for red!

New Makeup: YSL ‘Fusion Ink Foundation’ – Free 7 day Trials Available Now!

There’s been a buzz in the beauty industry today about a new foundation that YSL are launching on the 20th August 2014 ‘Fusion Ink’. It offers a medium to full coverage, is ideal for anyone who doesn’t like the feel of foundation on their skin, if you like to build up your coverage it’s ideal as it isn’t thick or dry so won’t go cakey. Another big thing going for it is that it contains volatile oils instead of water and powder like most long wear foundations so it only leaves the pigment on your skin.

I read on Money Saving Expert that as part of the Cara Delevingne marketing campaign they were sampling customers until it’s launch date. I headed to Selfridges to pick one up as it’s a larger store they have been allocated more. I was matched to a B10 as I don’t have a yellow or pink undertone the Beige tone suited my skin tone exactly. I tried the foundation this evening and it did feel light weight on my skin, I applied more around my chin and nose where I have more imperfections and I was happy with the result.

YSL fusion ink foundation

As a makeup artist in Manchester I’ve tested a lot of new foundations and I think this one will be perfect for brides who tend to have a combination/oily skin type. as it is long wearing. It also has has a velvety matte appearance so I wouldn’t need to buff as much powder into the skin to achieve a matte finish. I think it will be a great edition to my kit, and it’s reasonable priced at £30.50. However for any of my clients who prefer a dewy finish or have dry skin I’ll always stick to using Chanel ‘Vitalumiere.’

If you’d like to know a bit more information Vogue have written a review on it, to read it in full head to the site now

Ask the beauty advisor on the counter to demonstrate the shades, the best place to test it is on your  jaw-line, go for the one that disappears into your skin (you might be a slightly warmer shade if you have been on holiday). There are 18 shades available so there will definitely be one that’s right for you and if you love it, pop your name down on the waiting list!

Spring Makeup Trends 2014 – Pastel Shades Are Back With A Vengence!

Spring 2014 is nearly here and there are some fantastic products on the high street and online to help you achieve make up looks that are bang on trend this season. Creating a dewy flawless base is essential for this season. Must have products are shimmer blue/nude eye shadows, pastel pink blusher and bronzor.

It’s time to get artistic, glamorous vintage cat eye make up is particularly on trend this season. Go for a gel eyeliner which doesn’t dry as quickly compared to a liquid liner. This means you’ll have more time to warm the product on your hand and work with it to perfect the flick. It’s a good idea to rest your elbow to achieve a steady line as close to your lashes as possible, lift up your eyelid to check for any gaps. To finish neaten up the edges using a cotton bud with a tiny amount of eye makeup remover on the end. There are lots of products available on the market, however as a Makeup Artist in Manchester the one that I use on my clients is Mac Fluid line (£15.00)

Instead  of a classic red lip keep the focus on your eyes and use a nude Dior Rouge Lipstick in ‘Zemire Amber’ (£26.00) Finally create a golden sunkissed finish by dusting Estée Lauder “Bronze Goddess Powder Bronzer” (£30.00) onto your forehead, nose and cheekbones.

spring makeup trends pink blusher

For an alternative look why not use cream pastel shades which was beautifully created on the Jenny Packham models. Try Nars Shimmer Eye Shadow in ‘Bombshell’ (£17.00) For a gorgeous dewy skin use Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser, they also have an oil free version, perfect if you have a combination skin type or just want a lighter texture in the summer months (£33) Then place the focus onto your brows using Benefit Brow Zing (£23.50) To complement the look; define the apples of your  cheekbones with Giorgio Armani Sheer Blusher in ’10’ (£32)

Eyes were full impact on the Spring 2014 catwalks with blue in particular featured by Marc Jacobs. You can create an amazing result using a damp eye shadow brush to apply Urban Decay Eyeshadow in ‘Evidence’ (£14.00)’ Use a second dry eyeshadow brush to blend in circular movements, fade the intensity away and take it just above your eye socket. For an ultra feminine touch apply false lashes using Eylure lashes’110′ (£5.50) Keep the look fresh and bring it together with a pink L’oreal Balmy Gloss in ’Fail For Watermelon’ (£6.99). Add a pop of colour to your cheeks using your finger tips and Chanel Le Blush Creme ‘Inspiration’ (£27.00), which fits perfectly. Blend the colour in with your thumb to ensure there are no harsh edges.

Tinted Moisturiser vs Foundation – Which is Best For You?

Winter is here bringing with it cold weather as a result you might be suffering with dry skin. The areas that are most likely to be effected is your t-zone and cheeks. It’s a good time to swap your foundation for a tinted moisturiser because they usually contain spf and as they name suggests that are also more moisturising.

If you love a full coverage foundation then this may not be for you, although if you do need extra coverage you can apply concealor to any blemishes before hand. I would always use a foundation for an evening event or wedding as the look will be more suitable for photographs.

There are many benefits of using a tinted moisturiser, a few include.

  1. Quicker to apply because it’s sheer,
  2. You can use your fingers, start from your nose and blend out
  3. Cheaper
  4. Will even out your skin tone
  5. Dewy finish gives a great radiant result
  6. Light weight coverage, won’t block pores or look cakey
  7. They come in a tube so less wastage and it’s lighter to carry
  8. Great for young girls who want to wear foundaton but don’t need it yet

There are lots of products available on the market, however as a Makeup Artist in Manchester the one that I use on my clients is Laura Mercier ‘Tinted Mosturiser spf 20’ (£33). This also comes in an oil free formula, perfect if your looking for a matt finish and you have an oily skin type.

images-2

If you’ve never tried one and don’t want to spend a fortune or you’re on a budget Nivea do a great alternative, which also comes in different forumlas for dry skin or normal combination, (£9.99)

images-3

If you are currently using a tinted moisturiser that you’d like to recommend please let me know in the comments, thanks!
